![]() What the Ricoh Theta S video looks like after it’s stitched together using the Spherical Viewer software. ![]() One benefit of using the Theta S, however, is that it comes with free software that can stitch your 360 video into Equirectangular frame layout automatically. The Ricoh Theta S that I used is a great starter camera because of the price and easy setup, but it doesn’t have the best resolution. But what does that mean?ģ60-degree frame layout is determined by the type of camera you shoot with. Mettle Skybox 360/VR Tools supports Equirectangular Monoscopic 2:1 and Stereoscopic 1:1 Over-Under frame layouts. You can also roll the image to adjust the horizon line if it’s not straight. If the action that needs their attention is behind them, you can keyframe the video to move toward that direction. For example, you can tilt and pan the scene to direct the viewer’s POV in another direction. It allows you to move and direct the attention of the viewer by tilting, panning, and rolling the footage. Mettle Skybox Rotate Sphere: The Rotate Sphere effect is one of the most important tools here. Mettle Skybox Project 2D: The Project 2D effect allows you to place text and 2D objects (like graphics and logos) within the 360 video space. In my tutorial, I used a Ricoh Theta S camera, which doesn’t produce a very sharp 360-degree image. Mettle Skybox Sharpen: This effect is especially good for sharpening “soft” looking footage. Mettle Skybox Denoise: This filter will help remove visible and unwanted noise in darker areas of the footage. Mettle Skybox Blur: Standard blur to make footage appear out of focus. These effects can be applied to the footage directly, or to an adjustment layer in your timeline: The plugin includes a number of effects that you can keyframe within the Effects Controls Panel of Premiere Pro. ![]() Update (4/23/18): A spokesperson for Insta360 said that the extension only works with footage from the Insta360 Pro because it uses a proprietary stitching algorithm that’s tailored to the camera. The Mettle Skybox 360/VR Tools plugin for Premiere Pro is one of the most popular and affordable plugins on the market that will enable you to add effects to 360 VR footage. It isn’t clear if the Insta360 Premiere Pro extension will work with any footage other than what’s shot with the Insta360 Pro we’ve reached out to the company for clarification. Whereas an external stitching tool would take an pass to turn the raw footage into stitched 360 footage and then a final output would be rendered from that footage after editing, the Insta360 Premiere extension does it all in a single pass, which means higher quality output thanks to less re-processing of the footage. Not only does this approach stand to save editors time in the post-production process, Insta360 says, but it also reduces the number of video processing passes. After all the cutting, editing, and application of effects is complete, the raw footage gets a high quality stitch and is rendered to a final output precisely based on the edits made to the proxy video. Instead, the imported footage sees a simplified quick-stitching pass which creates a “proxy video,” a lower quality version of the raw footage that can be more quickly and easily manipulated in Premiere. The extension, which is free and will be released this quarter, says Insta360, will offer ‘no-stitch’ editing, which saves time by eliminating the need to stitch all of the raw footage (given that much of it will get trimmed out in the editing process anyway). The extension is said to work specifically with footage from the Insta360 Pro camera-the company’s $3,500 360 3D camera-which Adobe calls “industry-leading.” Thanks to a new extension soon to be released from Insta360, the company says that the complete editing workflow, from initial import of raw camera views to final 360 output, can now be handled inside of Premiere Pro.
